
On Friday, July 17, 2026, Sababa Agriculture Foundation participated in the official launch of the Integrated Catchment Conservation and Management initiative, hosted by the Mzimba North District Agriculture Office.
Held under the theme "Integrated Catchment: Key to Sustainable Agricultural Transformation, Food, Nutrition, and Income Security," the event focused on equipping local farmers with practical, climate-smart farming techniques to safeguard crops against severe drought conditions.
During the field demonstrations, agricultural extension officers and Sababa team members urged farmers to adopt modern soil and water conservation practices before and during the planting season
Among others, farmers were urged to embark on livestock production in order to accelerate manure production, as organic manure improves soil structure, enhances biological activity, and significantly increases the soil's water-holding capacity during dry spells. Not only that but also encourage adopting
Deep Bed Farming (DBF), as raising planting beds, optimizes root depth, reduces erosion, and helps trap moisture directly within the crop root zone.
Furthermore, swale construction through digging ditches and mounding swales along natural contours slows down rainwater runoff, allowing water to infiltrate deep into the soil table rather than washing away topsoil.
With climate change disrupting weather patterns, adopting proactive water-harvesting methods is no longer optional but rather critical to ensuring stable yields and household food security.
As SAF, the event reinforced our core mission to move farmers from vulnerability to climate resilience. Through the alignment with district authorities and encouraging hands-on practices like swale digging, manure application, and bed planting, SAF is positioning itself as a leading force in practical, community-level water harvesting, ensuring smallholder farmers protect their topsoil, survive dry spells, and secure their yields despite shifting climate patterns.
